Pennsylvania Self-Defense: Police: 73-Year-Old Jitney Driver Fatally Shoots Passenger During Attempted Robbery :: 04/03/2019

DUQUESNE, Pa. (KDKA) — A 73-year-old jitney driver fatally shot a passenger who allegedly tried to rob him Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 4 p.m. on Poplar Street in Duquesne.

Allegheny County Police say a 73-year-old man who works as a jitney driver picked up a 33-year-old man and another passenger in Duquesne.

While the 73-year-old was driving, the 33-year-old man allegedly pulled out a gun, struck the jitney driver in the head and demanded money. The other passenger got out of the vehicle and ran.

Police say the jitney driver and the 33-year-old man both got out of the vehicle. The jitney driver pulled out his own handgun and shot the 33-year-old.

The 33-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Allegheny County Police say the jitney driver legally owned the handgun he used in the shooting and he had a valid concealed permit to carry.

No charges have been filed against the jitney driver at this time.

When the investigation is completed, the case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for any official recommendation on charges.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Allegheny County Police Tipline at 1-833-255-8477.
